Weekly crits at WASPS, Meadowmill, Dundee.
A "crit" is a critical analysis of work, used in art schools and colleges to offer constructive feedback to the artist. These have been used for years with the objective of the arrtist hearing from other perspectives, and sometimes as a litmus or control test for the work, seeing how it faires outside the artists studio environment.
The main "crits" we will be doing will be a "typical" crit where the artist presents the work, speaks about the work, the choices made, and maybe where they want the work to go or their concerns about the work, then the participants may offer feedback. The second choice is a "silent" crit, where the work is presented, the participants offer feedback and then the artists responds. If the artist wants to try a different style we can discuss that once they have booked their place.
When you book your place, please email the organiser with:
name of your work / your name
dimensions (in centimeters)
how it will be presented (ie if you need use of a plinth/ if it will be hung)*
if you have a preference in running order
Duration (if it is a performance, the duration of your performance will be part of your 10 min slot)
if you would prefer a silent or typical crit (this can be changed on the day if you want)
Each participant will have atleast a 10 minute slot, however this may vary if on a given week there are less participants. The work shown does not need to be finished in any way, it can be a drawing, a sketch, a plan, a finished piece; it can be a performance, a scultpure, a painting, whatever you are making is fine. Please consider how the work will get into the studios, ie if it is huge - you will have to transport it so make sure you can lift it/it fits through doors etc.
Please also make sure to be wary about bringing any hazardous chemicals into the premises, and make sure to let the organiser know what your work is made of and if it is particularly hazardous/flammable/smelly etc. Participants will be put into a running order, please let the organiser know ahead of time if you have a preference In the spirit of fairness, participnats must stay and offer feedback to others once their slot is over, so as to make sure every artist feels the benefit of the group.
Participants are reminded that these sessions are to provide constructive feedback and critical analysis, therefore any personal jabs or bullying will not be tolerated, and anybody trying it will be papped out with no refund and will not be able to purchase a tikcte moving forward. Also, this is a working studio so please be mindful of items and existing work in the space, as well as our neighbours - meanign keep the noise down and try to keep it to one person talking at a time.
If you have any further questions, please let the organiser know at katiemcgroarty.art@gmail.com
You are repsonsible for installing your work, there are some easels and plinths available to use as well as wall attachments, but please make sure your work is ready to go. Please arrive with enough time to install your work, it is not good studio/crit etiquette to be instaling your work during someone else's crit.
As per general studio etiquette, please do not touch or take anything that is not yours unlss you have been given permission to.
